Top Five HVAC Tips for Fall

Heating MechanicsburgAs it’s been cooler during the evening hours, all Pennsylvanian’s know that fall has begun its approach.  In this state, we look forward to the beauty of autumn leaves, the crisp smell of fall in the air, and all the fun festivals.  As homeowners, we begin to make efforts to prepare our homes for fall and winter’s rapid arrival.

  1. Have your furnace inspected – A thorough inspection of your furnace can ensure that it is in top operating condition for the approaching seasons.  Don’t be left in the cold when it comes time to turn the heat on!
  2. Have your thermostats calibrated – It may seem like a minor thing, but an improperly calibrated thermostat can cause serious issues with your heating system.  These issues can lead to much higher energy bills as the weather gets colder.
  3. Adjust your registers – As heat rises, closing some of the registers on your top floor and opening more on the first floor can significantly reduce heating costs this fall.  Also, since this is such a simple fix, you can make adjustments as necessary.
  4. Filter, filter, filter – Once again, with the changing of the season should come the changing of your air filter.  A clean air filter can work wonders with both the efficiency of your system and reducing allergens in your home.
  5. Basic home maintenance – Cleaning your chimney, weather-stripping your windows and doors, and making sure there are no leaks in your attic can drastically improve the efficiency of your heating system in your home.  As heat leeches out of the house, you lose money.  Do everything you can to keep your heat inside your home.
