How to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

Heaters Mechanicsburg PAThe falling outdoor temperatures can mean only one thing; winter has begun its approach. Is your furnace ready to be fired up to protect your family from winter’s chill? There are certain preparations necessary before you turn on the heat for the first time.

Get a Check Up. The first safeguard is to ensure that your furnace is operating at its full capacity. The last thing you want to find on a super chilly day is that the furnace has broken and your family is now without heat. Calling someone out to your home to fix it on the fly can get pricey. Save yourself the money and have it checked out by a professional well in advance of turning it on.

Clear the Area. If you’ve been using the area around your furnace for storage, be sure to move stuff away from it before you fire it up. Superfluous items around your furnace could be a fire hazard.

Check Your Vents. Make sure furniture and other items are clear from the vents to ensure maximum heat distribution through your home. In-efficient heat can cost more as you increase the temperature to get a warmer home. Moving items off the vents can prevent heat loss.

Replace the Filter. As always, replace the filter in your furnace to effectively prepare for any change in seasons. An old filter can cause heat loss as well as the furnace struggles to perform.
