HVAC: Spring Maintenance Checklist

home maintenance Central PA

  • It’s that time of year again!  We can see the grass again, birds are chirping, and the temperature is slowly climbing out of the deep freeze range.  We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but did you know there is spring cleaning outside as well as inside?  Here are five maintenance tips for preparing your home for spring.
  • Change your air filters.  Changing the filters regularly, especially after a long winter can dramatically increase the effectiveness of your HVAC system.  It can also increase the air quality in your home.
  • Clean your gutters and downspouts.  During the fall and winter, all sorts of debris and leaves have piled up inside.  To avoid leaks and pooling water, clear all the muck and run a hose through the gutters to check for leaks.
  • Check your windows and doors.  During the winter, you may have obtained some new cracks in your windowsills or in the caulking you’ve done in previous years.  Now is the time to caulk the edges, fill in cracks, and replace if necessary.
  • Clear debris from your exterior HVAC unit.  During the preceding seasons, leaves and dirt can accumulate around and sometimes under your exterior unit.  Ensure that all dust and debris are removed from around this unit to be sure your HVAC unit reaches maximum effectiveness.
  • Have your furnace inspected.  Due to the change of seasons you’re going to be shutting down the heat and thinking about turning on the air.  There is routine maintenance required for all furnaces indoor units and most of the time a specialist will need to be called.
